The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has issued a News Release informing the public that a scam targeting senior citizens across the state, has already claimed victims in a number of counties, including Etowah, Jackson and Washington.
ALEA, and the State Bureau of Investigation are urging residents to be suspicious of anyone calling and asking for money in any form.
In this case each victim received a call from someone posing as their grandson who claimed to be in financial trouble and is requesting assistance in the form of a Walmart Gift Card.
The total amount taken in these three cases comes to more than $13,000.
This is simply a slight variation on many of the other scams currently in use.
Think before you act; if someone claims to be in need of help confirm it with friends and/or family members – don’t just hand out whatever the person on the phone is asking for.
Protect yourself from these vultures. Hang up.
