New “Sweet Home Alabama” Road Signs Coming Soon

Sweet Home Alabama 2Those from outside the state will soon see new road signs welcoming them to Alabama – and it’s a sign that contains a phrase dating back to 1974 – when the group Lynyrd Skynyrd released an album called Second Helping which contained the song “Sweet Home Alabama”.

Sweet Home Alabama 3Alabama State Tourism & Transportation officials say the “Alabama the Beautiful” signs which have stood in the state since 2003, will be replaced by brand new “Sweet Home Alabama” signs over the next several months. Smaller versions of the signs will be positioned on the grounds of the eight state welcome centers to serve as backgrounds for travelers’ photos.

The “Sweet Home Alabama” song title has been used on car tags and in tourism promotions for years and State Tourism Director Lee Sentell says that the song is recognized worldwide and the phrase just “makes people happy.”
