Brand New “Wheel of (Mis)Fortune” Scam Hits Cherokee County

Scam Alert 16It’s almost gotten to the point where we could do “scam” stories every day of the week – but most are essentially the same and we’ve pretty much heard it all before, BUT this one is just a little different; WEIS Radio received a call from a Cherokee County resident reporting that someone had called her neighbor, claiming to be with Wheel of Fortune.

Well, that’s different – kinda.

Scammers are known to use the names of legitimate companies in an effort to make people think they’re dealing with a reputable organization.

Of course, just because they’re calling themselves Wheel of Fortune, doesn’t mean that they are THE Wheel of Fortune; they could just as well call themselves Jeopardy Incorporated or better yet Liars, Crooks and Cheats Incorporated.

At any rate, they told the person they called that they had won $500,000 but before sending the money, they would need $10,000 for taxes, fees and so on.

Here’s where it gets really weird.  The woman was reportedly told to leave a BLANK CHECK in her mailbox, where Wheel of Fortune representatives would pick it up and then fill in the exact amount for her.

That indicates that the scammers are either local or its someone’s idea of a stupid prank.

Either way, it’s a waste of time and a scam.  If someone calls you with this story – simply tell them you’ve already solved the puzzle and the answer is GET LOST or whatever you wanna say just before you hang up on them.
