Numerous Trees And Power Lines Downed And Several Homes Damaged During Friday’s Severe Weather

Damage from Friday’s Severe Weather that rolled though the area was widespread across the county with numerous trees and power lines being reported down as the system made its way across Weiss Lake.

Cherokee County EMA Director Shawn Rogers reported trees and power lines down across County Road 22 near County Road 531, 4 miles east of Centre and County Road 71 near County Road 19.

Trees were also reported down on County Road 124, 7 miles east of Centre and trees and power lines down on County Road 31 near County Road 22 and on County Road 44 in Leesburg.

The Mt. Weisner Fire Department reported several trees down in that area with homes on County Road 71 and County Road 38 damaged by trees falling on them. A home on County Road 531 was also damaged after a tree fell on the home; fortunately no one was injured in either instance.

An 87 year old female was injured at a residence on County Road 212 after the stairs in her storm shelter collapsed as she was getting out of the shelter. She was taken to Cherokee Medical Center for treatment by Cherokee EMS.

Emergency responders also responded to two accidents during the torrential rainfall with the first occurring on top of the mountain on Alabama Highway 68 in Sand Rock involving two vehicles that collided head on. Sand Rock Firefighters, Cherokee EMS, Rescue Squad personnel and Alabama State Troopers responded to that scene.

A two car accident also occurred in front of the Weiss Mart in Cedar Bluff with the Cedar Bluff Police and Fire Departments, Cherokee EMS and personnel from the Spring Creek Fire Department responding to the scene. According to the Fire Department one vehicle t-boned the other and fortunately no one was injured.
