Obama 'Pleased' Chicago Cubs Are Playing 'So Well'

Phil Ellsworth / ESPN Images(WASHINGTON) — President Obama’s beloved Chicago White Sox may not have made it into the playoffs, but the Chicago-loving president is still “pleased” to see the Chicago Cubs “play so well,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday.

“The president is a loyal Chicago White Sox fan, and in his mind when it comes to evaluating baseball teams that’s the team that comes first,” Earnest said. “But the president is also a champion of his hometown and he’s certainly has been pleased to see the Chicago Cubs play so well this year.”

“It’s been a long time coming and Cubs fans have been waiting a long time for a team that looks like this,” he added. “The playoffs and baseball are exciting and I know the president’s looking forward to tracking their progress in the playoffs.”

Earnest said he was unaware of any plan for the president to go to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs play when he’s in Chicago this weekend.

The National League Division Series between the Cubs and the winner of the National League Wild Card begins Friday. The San Francisco Giants and New York Mets will duke it out Wednesday to see which team will advance to the series.
