Payload Overload Leads to Blocked Road in Summerville

A big rig blocked traffic for quite a while on Thursday afternoon, after a trailer being hauled by a recycling company buckled under the weight of its payload.

The driver was able to quickly move the rig off Farrar Drive, after hearing what he described as a “popping sound”; the truck came to rest between Marvin’s Builders Supply and a Golden Gallon convenience store.

The driver was on his way to the Rome location of Paper Recovery of Georgia when the accident took place; the trailer was loaded with 70,000 pounds of recycled cardboard from the Chattooga County Transfer Station on Stockade Road.

Heavy equipment brought in by the county was used to move the trailer out of the roadway until the contents can be removed and the trailer itself hauled away.
