Piedmont and Spring Garden Departments Battle Huge House Fire Saturday

Blaze 1The Piedmont and Spring Garden fire departments battled a huge, two story house fire over the weekend.

Shortly after 5:30 Saturday afternoon, the Piedmont Department received a call regarding a house fire in the 100 block of Calhoun Street, with the first of three responding fire engines arriving within three minutes if the call.

Firefighters arrived to find flames already shooting through the roof of the large home, and at that point contacted the Spring Garden Fire Department for assistance. According to Fire Chief Mike Ledbetter, Piedmont firefighters entered the first floor of that home to conduct a primary search; finding no one inside they then moved to the second floor and encountered heavy fire.

An interior fire attack was attempted – but due to structural conditions they were forced to exit the building and go into a defensive mode, fighting the fire from outside.

The blaze was soon brought under control; crews then re-entered the home and completely extinguished the fire.

Ledbetter stated that crews were on the scene just under four hours and fortunately no one was at home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured.

The fire is believed to have started as the result of an electrical short in a first floor wall.

Piedmont Police, the Piedmont Rescue Squad, and Piedmont Power & Light also responded to the scene.
