Piedmont Boys Win State Track & Field Championship

Piedmont won the AHSAA Class 3A boys state title accumulating 81 points in the two day event to outdistance runner-up Trinity by seven points. The Piedmont girls put together a solid performance to finish third behind Bayside Academy and T.R. Miller.

In Class 1A, Cedar Bluff saw their streak of six consecutive state boys and girls championships come to and end. The Lady Tigers finished in the runner-up position behind Westminster-Oak Mountain. The Cedar Bluff boys were fifth overall.

In Class 5A, the Fort Payne boys posted 52 points. The Wildcats were second to Paul W. Bryant (57.33).

Several area athletes picked up individual gold medals. Piedmont’s Denard Spears claimed the 3A 100 meter dash crown with a finals time of 11.41. Breanna Thompson, also of Piedmont, picked up a gold medal in the triple jump with a state record leap of 37 feet and 2 inches. Thompson destroyed the previous mark of 36 feet 5 inches. Thomas Ozmint of Glencoe skimmed through the 300 meter hurdles in 43.10, good for first place in Class 3A.

In the relay’s, Piedmont (44.71) edged Deshler (44.73) to garner a gold medal in the 4×100 meter event.
