According to a report on the website al.com – the groups opposed to a proposed wind farm project in Cherokee and Etowah counties, said that the company behind the development – Pioneer Green Energy – has recently informed them that it will not be building a wind farm in the state of Alabama.
According to a document filed on July 9th in Cherokee County Probate Court, Pioneer Green Energy President, Andrew Bowman, signed a memorandum terminating a lease to acreage which was slated to be developed for the project.
No Wind Alabama representative Mitzi Gibbs Eaker, said a similar agreement was signed in Etowah County.
A number of Cherokee County residents, and Etowah County residents – had filed suit in an attempt to stop the development in their respective areas.
The Cherokee County project proposed by Pioneer Green called for seven to eight turbines with a $40 million price tag – the larger Etowah County project would’ve consisted of 30 to 45 wind turbines costing some $160 million.
Those involved in the suits against the development cited a number of reasons they didn’t want the turbines in their community ranging from both environmental and property value concerns to noise and long-term development prospects.
Leesburg resident Ginny Shaver, who adamantly opposed the proposed development, said she felt the turning point finally came – when legislation was passed calling for regulations regarding design specs, setbacks and other guidelines.
