Quick Action by Police Officers Saves Life of Man Injured in Chainsaw Accident

Rome Fire and Rescue 1Two Rome police officers may have saved a man’s life Sunday afternoon, using a stick and a sweater.

PFC Ricky Robinson responded to a report of an accident involving a chainsaw on Kingston Avenue, with initial information saying the man may have cut his leg off.

Upon arrival, the officer took a sweater that was lying on the victim – and fashioned it into a tourniquet using a nearby stick to wind the tourniquet tight enough to cut off the bloodflow to the artery that was cut during the mishap.

Rookie Andy Rast assisted Robinson in the rescue.

Rome Fire Department Captain Grant Collier said although fire and EMS officials were right behind the officers, in a case such as this, every second counts – adding that the odds of him making much longer were very slim.

The man was transported from the scene to Floyd Medical Center for further treatment.
