Scam Using Names of Cherokee, Calhoun and DeKalb County Law Enforcement

Scam artists are apparently becoming more bold than ever with the latest round of con artist calls including name-dropping of local law enforcement agencies; residents in Cherokee, Calhoun and DeKalb counties have received calls from someone claiming to be with the local sheriff’s office.

According to information contained in a news release from DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris the individual starts the scam by telling that person that they’re in contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena and that there are warrants pending for their arrest. The caller will then tell that person that their arrest can be avoided by sending money, using either a Postal Money Order or a pre-paid Green Dot Visa Card.

In one instance here in Cherokee County, the caller asked for banking information as well.

The caller says that if the money is received, the warrants will be cancelled, and the person won’t have to go to court.

Of course, they weren’t going anyway because the entire thing is just another way of attempting to scam money.

Sheriff Harris stated that the names “Investigator Williams” and “Investigator Stone” have been used in DeKalb County – and both names are phony.

You can rest assured that none of these callers work for any law enforcement agency – and – the fact of the matter is – no sheriff’s office ever tries to solicit money for any such matter; cash will not satisfy a warrant, as warrants are either served or re-called.

Should you receive such a call – simply hang up.
