SCAM ALERT / Scam Artists Now Claiming to be IRS Representatives

Scam Alert 6Scammers are apparently become bolder everyday and they’re now claiming to be with the IRS in an effort to shake down unsuspecting members of the public.

And even though the name has changed, the scam remains the same.

The callers tell their intended victims that they’re being contacted because they owe money to the IRS – and if they don’t settle up immediately additional action could be forthcoming – which could include garnishment of your paycheck and even the seizure of bank accounts.

They then pull some number out of the air and demand payment via a credit or debit card – or through a “Green Dot” card which can be purchased at a local department store.

The IRS DOES NOT contact those owing back taxes, fees or penalties in such a manner.

Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver informs us that the area code (202) is the number most associated with this latest scam.

Remember, this is simply another scare tactic that you should be aware of.

Don’t fall for it.

If you receive such a call – simply hang up and forget about it.
