SHHHHHH – Don’t Speak to Scammers!

There’s yet another scam going around and this one actually has a devious new twist; If you receive a call from someone that you don’t know, and you hear a voice asking “Can you hear me?” – DON’T SAY ANYTHING!  JUST HANG UP!

As part of this new scam, those on the other end of the line are recording victims when they say the word “yes” – they can then use that recording to make unauthorized charges on that person’s phone or utility bill.  Victims are charged because the scammer already knows the person’s phone number and phone providers pass through the third-party charges.

Many people have fallen prey to this scam and aren’t even aware of it.

If you believe that you may have fallen for this new attack, check your credit card and cable statements for unknown charges; disputes on credit card charges can be discussed with the Federal Trade Commission, and all telephone bill disputes can be taken up with the Federal Communications Commission.

Keep in mind, anytime you carry on a conversation with anyone pulling a scam they may be recording every word you say, so the only way to protect yourself is to simply hang up from the start.
