WEIS Radio News has learned than a great deal of social media activity, regarding sightings of “clowns” in different locations around the area has been taking place; these unconfirmed reports have led to local law enforcement officials being placed on heightened alert, simply as a precautionary measure.

In addition to Cherokee County – reports have recently been filed across northeast Alabama and in northwest Georgia.

The idea of “clowns”, apparently intent on harming children, popping up in neighborhoods across the U.S., and primarily in the southeastern portion of the country has been going on for several weeks now, and according to reports more than one person has been arrested in connection with creating false reports regarding such incidents, and in at least one instance simply dressing up as a “clown” as their idea of a joke.

Authorities are encouraging residents of the area NOT to engage in any activity which could lead to the spread of rumors or create panic especially through the use of social media; also do NOT spread false information as a “joke” or “prank” in regard to this matter.
