‘Standing Room Only’ Crowd As School Board Discusses Capital Plan

It was standing room only for the Work Session held just prior to the regular meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education on Tuesday evening.

Officials with RA-LIN Construction and McKee & Associates presented to the board an overall long term ‘Master plan’ for each school and addressed questions from the board concerning the plan.

There were several faculty and staff members from Centre Elementary School along with other board employees who were present to ask questions and address concerns regarding their respective campus.

Following what was lengthy and at times a heated discussion, the board must now take the issues presented and over the next three weeks take the Capital Plan that was presented and make a decision on what the best options are in terms of long-term planning for the school system as it relates to infrastructure and also teacher units.

In other business the board the 2017/2018 salary schedules and a revised bus driver job description in addition to a contract with Cook’s Pest Control for services at Gaylesville School.

An approval of a license renewal for Google Management for a one year period in addition to a contract with Go-Play Therapy Services for Physical and Occupational Therapy Services.

Superintendent of Education Mitchell Guice also stated that he has spoke with each school principal concerning the upcoming solar eclipse and stated that each school has the necessary safety precautions and equipment in place to make sure that students viewing the eclipse will be protected. Guice also said that the board will treat that day as a weather day and that parents who do not wish for their child to participate in viewing the eclipse may check them out. Mr. Guice said that all school activities normally held outside during that time will be moved indoors and no buses will run during that time.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education will be September 7th with a Work Session at 5:00 p.m. which will include a Budget Hearing, the regular meeting at 6:00 p.m. and a second Budget Hearing taking place September 12th at 6:00 p.m.
