Suspect Accused Of Shooting At Police In Jacksonville Is Now In Custody

Calhoun County Sheriff Matthew Wade said authorities took armed suspect Charles Williams into custody around 2:15 p.m. today.

Authorities said Williams, 45, armed with an AR-15, had fired at deputies in pursuit at three different locations shortly after midnight.

He was apprehended near an old railroad bed off Roy Webb Road by a game warden, Wade said. He was taken into custody without incident and will face charges of attempted murder, among other possible charges.

Authorities said Williams robbed family members late last night of guns and ammunition, and had another AR-15 with him when he was arrested, Wade said. Several hours earlier, Williams fired at and attempted to run down deputies during a pursuit.

He was taken into custody not far from where he disappeared into the woods along Cove Road in Jacksonville earlier in the day. The search took place a little more than five miles from the Jacksonville State University campus.

Multiple agencies set up a staging area this morning near Nisbet Lake Road and Cove Road. A helicopter from the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office, along with Department of Corrections dogs, scoured the area.

Investigators were also on the scene at Dripping Road Rock near Piedmont, where Williams lived in a trailer. That trailer was burned down this morning when officers came looking for Williams. Family members believed Williams was under the influence of drugs when he staged the robbery.

“Drugs and guns are not a good combination,” Wade said.

Wade thanked multiple agencies which responded in the search, as well as scores of officers who participated. He was also thankful no one was injured in any of the incidents. At one location, Wade said, Williams fired 18 rounds at officers.

“I’ve got a deputy who is expecting a child in March,” he said. “I’m glad he can look forward to that. Nobody got hurt on either side. Thank God.”
