Teenage Driver Killed in Collision with Etowah County School Bus

A teenage driver was fatally injured in a Thursday afternoon crash involving a pickup truck and an Etowah County school bus on the last run of the year.

Etowah County Coroner Michael Head said 16 year old Trenton Blake Gibbs of Altoona, was driving a truck which collided with that bus around 2:45pm on Alabama 132, just past West End Elementary.  Gibbs, a student at West End High School – was air-lifted from the scene to UAB Hospital, where he died of blunt force trauma sustained in the wreck.

Etowah County School Superintendent Alan Cosby said four people on the bus were injured – two adults and two students.

One student was transported by vehicle, and one by ambulance, but only as a precaution.

Of the two adults one was a teacher’s aide who was transported to a hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries and the other, the driver, was air-lifted for treatment.

No additional information has been released regarding the condition of those injured.
