The “One Ring” Scam Still Making the Rounds Locally

Scam Alert 6

The Better Business Bureau is warning cell phone users about another scam – one with a slightly different twist.

This con has been dubbed the “One Ring” scam because the victim’s phone will usually ring just once before the call is disconnected on purpose by the perpetrator.  If a victim tries to return that call they are charged an international call fee of $19.95 PLUS $9.00 a minute for the duration of the call.

Those calls appear to be coming from the Caribbean nations including:  the Dominican Republic, Granada, Jamaica and the British Virgin Islands.

Area codes for those calls include 268 – 274 – 473 – 809 and 876.

Should you see one of those pre-fixes as part of a missed call number simply ignore it and do not call back.

If you feel as though you may’ve been a victim of this scam – contact your cell phone carrier and make a report of the incident.  By documenting the fraud you may have a better chance of getting the charges removed from your bill.
