Tips to Beat the Summer Heat

Heat 2Blistering summer heat arrived early this year – and of course, it’s far from over.

Even though the weather forecast is calling for a slight cooling trend over the next few days it pays to keep in mind that some simple common sense tips on how to beat the heat will go a long way toward making the summer months safer and more comfortable.

Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably of a light color and bear in mind that cotton clothing will keep you cooler than most synthetic blends.

Alter your pattern of outdoor activities such as exercise and yard work to take advantage of cooler temperatures early in the morning or late in the evening.

Drink plenty of fluids such as water or sports drinks which provide electrolytes; also, avoid alcohol or caffeine since they actually promote dehydration.

Instead of cooking with an oven use the microwave or have sandwiches or some other food item that doesn’t require a stove.

Turn off unnecessary lights in your home, and turn off or unplug unnecessary electronics – this makes a tremendous difference in the amount of heat generated in your living quarters

Seal air leaks around doors and windows to help keep cool air in and hot air out.

Use a fan, even if you have a/c – this will help to circulate the cool air through the home.

Heat 4Make sure outdoor pets have plenty of fresh, cool water and a shaded area in which to rest.

Exercise common sense; if the heat is simply unbearable, stay indoors as much as possible; if you don’t have air-conditioning plan to spend a portion of the day inside a shopping mall, movie theater or any other public place which is cool.

Also be sure to check on elderly friends and neighbors, young children, or anyone you may know with a chronic illness, as they may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
