Total of Five Killed in Two Separate Weekend Accidents

A Gadsden man was killed in a single-vehicle wreck outside of Jacksonville, during the early morning hours of Sunday.

According to an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency accident report, 53 year old Kerry Allen Criswell was fatally injured when his 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser left the roadway – overturning in a creek.

Criswell, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident took place at 3:20am on Alabama Highway 204, approximately five miles west of Jacksonville.

A two-vehicle crash on Saturday claimed the lives of four people and injured one other four miles south of Talladega.

According to the accident report 38 year old Leiah Gatlin Watts of Munford was killed when her 2014 Ford Expedition was struck by a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado, driven by Wiley Marsh Whitworth, age 75 of Talladega.

Watts was pronounced dead at the scene and three passengers in her vehicle were killed.

They’ve been identified as – 73 year old Evelyn Foshee Watts of Munford, 73 year old Melda Faye Howard of Lincoln and Mary Anna Burgess Adair, age 78, also of Lincoln.

A fourth passenger, Tammy McBurnett, 44 of Lincoln, was transported to Citizen’s Hospital in Talladega for treatment. 

Whitworth was unhurt.

That crash, which took place on Alabama Highway 21 at the intersection of Grist Mill Road – remains under investigation.
