Tropical Storm Cindy – How We Could Be Affected

Tropical Storm Cindy was expected to come onshore Thursday in either Texas or Louisiana, but Alabama is in the bullseye when it comes to a threat for heavy rain and flooding over the next few days – and not just along the coast – as Cindy’s effects will be felt well inland in Alabama through at least Friday.

Here’s a look at what to expect in our area.

Central Alabama

(National Weather Service)

Rain from continued to spread slowly northward, working its way into central Alabama on Wednesday morning. More rainfall is expected, and a flash flood watch will remain in effect through Thursday evening. The watch includes much of central Alabama except for eastern counties.

The weather service in Birmingham said 2 to 5 inches of rain will be possible, with areas in the southwest getting possibly up to 6 inches. Forecasters say there is also a low confidence threat of brief tornadoes after 8:00pm south of a line from Livingston to Fort Deposit. Some Isolated tornadoes will be possible tonight in the areas in green. (NWS)

Central Alabama will have a risk of severe storms on Thursday and a slightly higher risk on Friday.

North Alabama

The weather service in Huntsville said that heavy rain and storms are expected to move into north Alabama tonight and will persist into Friday as what’s left of Cindy tracks to the north and east after landfall.  Multiple rounds of rain and storms will be possible, and there will be a risk of flooding.  North Alabama could get up to 3 inches of rain with isolated areas getting even more. Those totals could climb depending on Cindy’s eventual track.

In addition there will be a chance of strong to severe storms on Thursday and Friday – with the best chances appearing to come on Friday.  The weather service said that the overall severe weather threat is on the low side, but a weak tornado will be possible late Thursday into Friday evening.
