Tuesday Evening Fire at Southeastern Mills

Rome Fire 100Rome firefighters responded to a small fire at Southeastern Mills on Tuesday evening.

Firefighters received a call regarding smoke in the building just before 7:30. According to Battalion Chief Gene Proctor, they arrived to visible smoke coming from the roof around the 5th floor of the production area, located in the rear of the plant.

Proctor said it was quickly determined that the bearings on a grain elevator had burned out and caught the grain inside the grain chute on fire.

The fire extended from the basement to just above the roof.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and made a fast attack on the fire shutting the machinery down and containing the blaze in about 15 minutes.

Units remained on the scene disassembling the machinery and putting out any spot fires.

They were able to keep the fire contained by keeping the covers on the machines until they could get water on it to keep the grain from igniting.

Fortunately no one was injured during the incident.
