According to Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship, Chief Investigator Randy Mayorga has been working several cases of Scams involving Money Grams and Cashier Checks.

Mayorga has completed several of the investigations, made an arrest, identified one of the suspects who was located in Carson, California and recovered $2,195 on one of the fraudulent cashier’s checks which was cashed in Omaha, Nebraska

The victim received $2,200 in cash via money gram that originated from a fraudulent cashier’s check cashed in Omaha, NE

The victim apparently became involved in a relationship with the scammer from Nigeria who claimed to be a resident of Cleveland, Ohio – she was told that an unnamed person would send her money and that she was to receive it from Money Gram and then send back to him via Money Gram so that he could then in turn buy a plane ticket to come visit her.

Chief Blankenship said that Inv. Mayorga spoke with the victim and she stated to becoming skeptical about the situation she contacted him – within a matter of just days he was able to find out where exactly the money came from and identify the person who sent it after talking with personnel from the bank in Nebraska.

In another incident, a scammer from Carson, CA claimed to be an agent with the IRS and demanded that the victim send $900.00 immediately via money gram. Chief Blankenship advised that as the investigation continued Inv. Mayorga was able to identify the subject responsible for the scam and is currently working with authorities in California to apprehend the suspect.

Mayorga said that he has positively identified that suspect and is waiting on authorities with the Los Angeles, California Sheriff’s Department to apprehend the individual.

An arrest involving a third case has also been made with the victim residing in Pennsylvania; the suspect was arrested in Centre after the illegal transaction was made in Cherokee County.

Chief Blankenship would like to stress the importance to residents of the City of Centre and Cherokee county (as well as surrounding areas) that it is imperative that they become aware of these types of scams. It is seen and heard of on a daily basis where people contact centre police dept. On incidents where they have deceivingly lost money to scammers. Many people may attempt to pose as an IRS agent, or another position to get your money, so please be careful and mindful of these schemes.
