Windsurfer Rescued from Lake Michigan by Coast Guard

U.S. Coast Guard(EVANSTON, Ill.) — The Coast Guard rescued a windsurfer in Lake Michigan after his mast broke.

Dramatic video shows Coast Guard members chasing down the man Monday about a mile east of Lee Street Beach in Evanston, Illinois, after a search-and-rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan in Milwaukee followed up a call from the Evanston Police Department.

The report came from a good Samaritan who said his friend had texted him about wind-surfing off Lee Street Beach and that his mast had broken, leaving him stranded.

The Evanston Fire Department arrived first on the scene, and was unable to see the man in distress. Firefighters were able, however, to call him on his phone.

The Coast Guard has not released the man’s name.
