Woman Claiming to Have Cancer Charged with Theft by Deception

The Shelby County Jail is a far cry from Disneyland but that’s where one 37 year old woman managed to secure accommodations after allegedly scamming good Samaritans out of more than $38,000 through false claims of being stricken with cancer.

Attorney General Steven T. Marshall announced that Jennifer Flynn Cataldo was arrested in connection with a pair of on-line GoFundMe fundraising campaigns, pulling in thousands of dollars from well-wishers sending in money for medical bills and a Disney family vacation.

The campaigns stated that Cataldo was a terminal cancer patient; however, an investigation into those claims proved them to be untrue.

That joint state and federal investigation is on-going, and no additional information is being released at this time.  Anyone with any information regarding this case, or anyone who may have been a victim is urged to contact the Criminal Trials Division at (334) 353-1875.

Cataldo has been charged with two counts of Theft by Deception 1st Degree – with bond set at $50,000 on each count.
