An Anniston woman has been arrested after taking money and various gifts – from those wishing to offer help when they heard the woman’s son had terminal cancer.

However, there was more to the story as Calhoun County Chief Deputy Matthew Wade told us in an exclusive interview.

The woman’s son had been truant – missing a significant number of days from school unexcused – and when contacted regarding the matter 41 year old Sandra Lloyd said her son had been out as a result of being treated for terminal cancer.

Several teachers at Walter Wellborn Elementary School along with a number of individuals from the community banded together to help the family – raising money, buying gift cards and helping in a variety of other ways.  A local dealership also sold the family a used vehicle at a nominal fee

It later turned out that the son was not suffering with cancer, and the entire thing had simply been a scam perpetrated by the mother.

41 year old Sandra Lloyd was arrested and charged with first degree Theft by Deception which is a felony; Wade says additional charges could be forthcoming.

Lloyd remains in the Calhoun County Jail on $8,000 bond, and she has a court date of May 23rd.
