Woman’s Bathroom Visit Results in Drug Arrest

A recent trip to the bathroom played a role in a Chattooga County woman being arrested on drug charges.

Corporal Corey Fielding along with Deputies Harley Elliot and Thomas Sainthill responded to a report of an accident at 7069 Highway 27 and they arrived at the scene to find a Nissan Altima down a steep embankment resting in a set of trees near a residence.

It was quickly learned that the driver of the vehicle, identified as Clory Smith was inside the bathroom of the home, and was refusing to come out.

After a short time, the woman did finally come out and officers noted that she was upset by being involved in the accident; she stated that the spare tire on the vehicle malfunctioned, and that was what caused the accident.  At about that time, the homeowner advised officers that she had just discovered drugs in the bathroom where Smith had initially gone after the accident.

According to the report, a white, powdery substance was found in the floor of the bathroom along with several pieces of what appeared to be a broken a glass pipe lying in the floor – further investigation turned up a clear plastic bag containing a white, powder like residue, lying behind the toilet.

Smith denied knowing anything about the items or leaving them in the bathroom; she was then transferred to Redmond Regional in Rome by EMS.

The homeowners said they heard the accident and when they went to help Smith from the vehicle, she immediately requested to use the bathroom; a black bag was also recovered, which contained a straw and a white, powder like residue.

The broken glass taken from the scene tested positive for methamphetamine resulting in a warrant for Clory Smith on charges of possession of methamphetamine, tampering with evidence and possession of drug-related objects.
