Wrongful Death Suit Results in Million Dollar Plus Judgment Against Roy Thomas Smith

It’s been several years but most people will still recall the murder case in Etowah County in which the body of a woman was discovered in the trunk of her car, in a gravel lot on Brooke Avenue between the I-759 overpass and Alabama 77.

Carla Smith was a nursing supervisor at Riverview Regional Medical Center, and after she’d failed to show up for work one day, co-workers became concerned.

Her body was found later that same day, November 1st, of 2010.  Her husband, Roy Thomas Smith, was convicted in 2014, of strangling her to death.  Prosecutors contend that he killed his wife due to fears of possibly losing assets in a divorce.

What has brought this case back into the news, is the fact that Etowah County Circuit Judge William Rhea, has awarded Michael Shawn Stone, who is the son of Carla Smith, a summary judgment in the amount of $1,250,000 in a wrongful death suit against Roy Thomas Smith.

That suit was filed in November of 2010.
