14th Anniversary Memorial Of 9/11 Held In Centre

This year marks the 14th Anniversary when terrorist carried out attacks on American soil, on Friday morning Cherokee County residents and First Responders gathered on the steps of the Courthouse to remember the victims of September 11, 2001.

Elementary School students lined the streets with American Flags as a procession of emergency vehicles passed through Centre, among those in attendance was Cherokee County Commissioner Kimball Parker.

We also spoke with Cherokee County Probate Judge and Commission Chairman Kirk Day.

Among those that spoke during the Ceremony was Centre Fire Chief Kevin Ware who reminded those of the brave men and women who have lost their lives in Cherokee County and across the nation.

Chief Rich Lindsey of the McCord’s Fire Department also spoke giving a brief overview of the events that unfolded 14 years ago, Chief Lindsey also spoke of the 2,977 victims that perished of those 343 were Firefighters and Paramedics and 60 were Police Officers.

The Rev. George Cobb, Pastor at Ebenezer United Methodist Church brought forth a very strong message of heroism and courage to those in attendance.

Shawn Rogers of the Spring Creek Fire Department brought a poem entitled “The 343” which is dedicated to those who paid the ultimate price as emergency responders.

Assistant Fire Chief Rick Bibb with the Centre Fire Department thanked all those in attendance for showing their support of local first responders and asked, as he recited The Firefighters Prayer, that everyone in the community continually pray for Cherokee County’s First Responders.

Centre Firefighter Nick Whorton recited a poem entitled “When Brave Men Cry” before Chief Kevin Ware closed out the ceremony paying honor to Cherokee County’s First Responders killed in the line of duty.

On April 6, 2002 Cherokee County lost its first Volunteer Firefighter when retired Fire Chief Billy Tucker of the Broomtown Fire Department was struck and killed while directing traffic at an accident scene.

In DeKalb County, Firefighter Adam Cody Renfroe of the Crossville Fire Department lost his life on October 6, 2008 after he was overtaken by fire while searching for a victim in a house fire.

Centre Police Investigator Jeff Bryant was killed in the line of duty on December 20, 2013 when his patrol car was struck head as he was returning from a prisoner exchange in DeKalb County.

Then just earlier this year, retired Centre Fire Chief Hobert Reed passed away at the age 91 after 68 years of serving the City of Centre.

The service was brought to a close as Cherokee County High School Band Director Thomas Moore preformed Taps.
