Piedmont Man Charged With The Murder Of Carla Fuqua

Jimmy SteedA Piedmont man has been charged with murder in the death of Carla Cook Fuqua.

According to Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson – Jimmy Ray Steed has entered guilty pleas to Murder, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Manufacturing Methamphetamine.

Steed was charged with the murder of Carla Michelle Fuqua. Fuqua disappeared on the night of October 29, 2009.

Her body was later found on December 4, 2012 on a hill behind the old Piedmont Brickyard south of Piedmont off of Alabama 21. According to her phone records, the last outgoing call made by her cell phone was at 9:21 p.m. that evening.

Carla was living on Piedmont Springs Road at the time of her disappearance. Her family filed a Missing Person’s Report with the Piedmont Police Department on November 19, 2009.

That evening she told her roommate she was going to meet someone and another friend dropped her off at Steed’s residence.

During the investigation, Steed denied that Carla had been at his residence that night. Her roommate, Daniel Phillips, was later charged with Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card after she used Carla’s vehicle and debit card at several locations.

Steed’s guilty pleas were “open pleas”, meaning there was no agreement to the sentence he was to receive. Steed’s sentence will be decided by Judge Brian Howell.

The Calhoun County Cold Case Unit, The District Attorney’s Office, Piedmont Police Department, and the Ohatchee Police Department as well as a number of other agencies inside and outside of Alabama assisted with the investigation
