Gadsden/Etowah County Emergency Management Agency crews responded to a report of a wreck which resulted in a fuel spill just before 7:00pm Tuesday.

Southside Fire Chief Tim McKee said the accident took place on Highway 77 near Royal Oak Street, when an 18-wheeler coming up the steep incline, swerved into oncoming traffic and then left the roadway, crashing into trees.

The cab separated, rupturing the fuel tank, causing about 160 gallons of diesel to spill out.

The driver, whose name has yet to be released, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Hazardous materials workers responded to the location to begin clean up operations.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
