Memorial Day saw tragedy strike in the form of a drowning death at DeSoto State Park in Ft Payne.
At around 11:15 Monday morning witnesses reported seeing a man jump from the falls into the water. When the man failed to resurface, a recovery operation began in the area where the individual jumped with Alabama State Park Rangers, The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office in addition to Desoto Rescue and Ft Payne Rescue responding.
The body was found in the same general area where the man had jumped.
DeKalb County Coroner Tom Wilson said the incident is believed to have been an accident – the victim has been identified as 40 year old Joseph Nicholas Cantrell of Rome, Georgia.
