Gaylesville’s Cole Murphy leads Panthers to 20-17 OT victory over Millsaps on Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern College football team held off Millsaps College Saturday afternoon in Krulak Stadium, winning 20-17 in overtime.  BSC (3-6) improved to 2-5 in the Southern Athletic Association with the win on senior day.

The Panthers offense out performed Millsaps with 329 total yards.  And the defense earned three interceptions and forced two fumbles.

Zack Seay (DeFuniak Springs, Fla./Freeport HS) rushed for a game and career-high 100 yards on a career-high 32 carries.  Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS) threw for a game-high 186 yards completing 23-of-35 passes.  His primary targets of Jamal Watkins (Hampton, Ga./Dodge City CC) and Buddy Dowd (Dothan, Ala./Northview HS) finished with 88 and 55 receiving yards, respectively.  Watkins’ 88 yards was a game-high.  He finished with 131 all-purpose yards.

Ryder Andrews (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) was 2-for-3 on field goals, including the game winner in overtime.  He averaged 52 yards per kickoff and placed two punts inside the 20.

Defensively, Cole Murphy (Gaylesville, Ala./Gaylesville HS) finished with a team-high nine tackles.  He forced and recovered the fumble that ended Millsaps overtime possession at the 11-yard line.

BSC opened scoring with seven minutes left in the first quarter.  Oakes found Robert Shufford(McKenzie, Ala./McKenzie HS) in the back of the endzone for a 12-yard touchdown.  Seay extended the lead by punching the ball across from three yards out in the second quarter.

After Millsaps responded with a touchdown of their own, Andrews hit his first field goal from 39 yards out to put the Panthers up 17-7.  The Majors then pushed back into the game, scoring 10 quick points to send it into overtime.

After Murphy’s forced fumble ended Millsaps overtime possession, the Panthers worked their way inside the 10 on the back of Seay.  Andrews then hit a 26 yard field goal for the win.

BSC ends its regular season on the road at Centre College on Saturday, Nov. 11.  Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. ET
