Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven in “Stranger Things”; Curtis Baker/Netflix(LOS ANGELES) — The smash hit Netflix series Stranger Things is all about paying tribute to the sci-fi and horror shows of the ’80s, so some casting news for season two makes total sense.
Netflix confirms to ABC News a Variety report that Sean Astin, one of the stars of the classic 1985 movie The Goonies — whose plot bears some similarity to Stranger Things — has joined the cast as Bob Newby, a former nerd and high school classmate of Will’s mom Joyce Byers and Sheriff Hopper. He’s now the manager of the local RadioShack.
Meanwhile, Paul Reiser, who memorably played a villain in the 1986 sci-fi/horror movie Aliens, also has come on board. He’ll play Dr. Owens, who works for the Department of Energy. He’s hired to “contain” the bizarre goings-on of the past year, which saw Will Byers being kidnapped by a terrifying alien from another dimension, a.k.a. The Upside Down.
The third casting announcement involves Linnea Berthelson, who plays an emotionally-damaged young woman named Roman, who is somehow connected to all the crazy things that happened last year.
Season two will debut in 2017.
