A Memorial Day Weekend Message from Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver

A Message from Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver

As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, I would like to remind everyone to focus on a safe and fun holiday weekend.  Cherokee County will see a huge number of visitors to Weiss Lake, Little River Canyon, Cherokee Rock Village and Terrapin Creek over the holiday weekend.  Please remember these safety tips:

-Avoid alcohol while boating and swimming

-Always wear a life jacket on a boat

-Supervise children at all times

-Don’t swim alone or in bad weather

-Never drink and drive or ride with those who have been drinking

-Wear your seatbelt at all times

The majority of accidents we see during the holiday are motor vehicle crashes and water related accidents.  The Sheriff’s Office will have increased patrols during this period from Thursday through Monday. A significant amount of those extra patrols are funded through a traffic safety grant from ADECA to look for speeders and impaired drivers.  Our deputies will also be on marine patrol to help keep the many boaters safe.  Please do your part to help everyone enjoy this holiday weekend.
