A Time to Honor Heroes

Honoring Heroes was, in large part, the theme behind the Monday meeting of the Cherokee County Commission, with several organizations being recognized for their contributions to the community.

That included the commission adopting a resolution recognizing April as National Community College Month – those in attendance during that meeting included Dr. Martha Lavender, the President of Gadsden State Community College, Dr. Theresa Ray, the Dean of Enrollment & Retention and Luanne Hayes, Director of Gadsden State Cherokee.

Commission Chairman Tim Burgess:

Members of DHR were also on hand as the commission members officially recognized April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Research has shown when parents possess six protective factors the risk for neglect and abuse greatly diminish while optimal outcomes for children, youth, and families are promoted – with the six factors including nurturing and attachment; knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development; parental resilience; social and emotional developmental well-being; social connections; and concrete supports for parents

April was likewise adopted as National County Government Month, and Ms. Chris Anderson with the American Red Cross was in attendance – and in this case, it was she who wished to make a presentation to the Cherokee County Commission:

The commission also adopted a resolution honoring our 9-1-1 Dispatchers for all their hard work – the following is a brief excerpt from Commissioner Carlton Teague’s reading of that resolution into the record and his comments:

There was also a surprise in store for one dispatcher – a 25 year veteran – Rodney Higgins, who was awarded his 25 year plaque by Johnny Roberts and Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency Director Shawn Rogers – who has his own way with an introduction:

Also, a resolution was adopted designating a portion of County Road 70 as the “J.C. Stallings Parkway”, in honor of his many years of service on the Cherokee County Park Board.

In other business an agreement was approved between the county commission and State of Alabama for the resurfacing of County Road 29 from County Road 33 to County Road 643.  An upgrade to the security system at the Cherokee County Courthouse was also approved with Southern Data in the amount of $9,306.50 coming from the Capital Improvement Fund.  In regard to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office it was approved that a 2018 Ford Explorer be declared surplus and sold at auction and approval was also granted for a reimbursement grant in the amount of $5,000 which will be used for the Sheriff’s Office to participate in the 2019 Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Initiative Program.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee County Commission is set for Monday, April 22nd at 5:00pm – taking place in the County Administration Building – located on the Cedar Bluff Road in Centre.
