Airline Industry Anticipates 3.5% Increase in Holiday Travelers

moodboard/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) — U.S. airlines are readying for yet another busy holiday travel season.

Airlines for America (A4A) announced on Thursday that it expects 45.2 million passengers to take to the skies during the 21 days between Dec. 16 and Jan. 5. That’s up 3.5 percent from the same time period last year.

In preparation, the industry trade group says U.S. airlines will add more routes and use larger planes in order to offer an additional 99,000 seats per day.

A4A anticipates the busiest days to travel during the 21-day period to be Dec. 22 and Dec. 23; the lightest days are expected to be Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
