Alabama Adds More Than 1,300 New Confirmed Coronavirus Cases from Tuesday into Wednesday

Alabama saw yet another substantial increase in confirmed cases of coronavirus across the state going from Tuesday into Wednesday (July 22nd), adding 1,338 to the total, which now stands at 70,413 since March.  The Tuesday, July 21st 10:00am numbers from the Alabama Department of Public Health showed the state had, so far, had a total of 69,075 coronavirus cases, with 29,736 presumed to have recovered.   The ADPH states 1,325 people have died from coronavirus – with another 35 being listed as “probable” in that category.

According to the latest data for Cherokee County – a total of 174 confirmed cases have been reported with a total of seven deaths resulting from the illness. 

Out of a total of 538 tests administered during the past 14 days a total of 62 positive results have been returned locally.

According to the ADPH 41% of Alabama’s coronavirus cases are among those between ages 25 and 49 – 20% of all cases are among those ages 5 – 24; another 20% between the ages of 50 and 64.  Those ages 65 and older account for 16% of cases, while fewer than 2% are four years old and below.

Since tracking began, 4,796 healthcare workers at hospitals and doctor’s offices have tested positive for coronavirus.  That’s roughly 7% of all the state’s confirmed cases.  3,212 long-term care facility residents and 1,989 long-term care facility employees have tested positive. Those two categories account for 8% of the state’s total cases.  Since tracking began 8,538 Alabamians, roughly 12% of all cases had to be hospitalized due to COVID.  A total of 1,009 required treatment in the ICU – meanwhile, 535 had to be placed on mechanical ventilation

As of July 21st, 96% of those COVID deaths in Alabama were among people with underlying medical conditions.  The most common underlying medical condition among those deaths is cardiovascular disease, reported in 62% of cases, followed by “multiple underlying medical conditions” at 54%. Other double-digit conditions were diabetes (40%); kidney disease (26%); and lung disease (24%).
