Alabama Highway 117 Closed Indefinitely

On Thursday, the Georgia Department of Transportation received a call from the Alabama Department of Transportation asking assistance on rerouting traffic from Georgia Highway 48 crossing the state line into Alabama.

A spokesperson with the Alabama DOT told WAAY Television the road between Mentone and Valley head was cracking and dipping.  Alabama DOT has had issues on the same stretch of roadway in the past.

The Georgia DOT placed electronic signs in Summerville on Thursday diverting commercial and through traffic to Georgia Highway 114.  Westbound commercial and through traffic will need to take Highway 114 (the Lyerly Highway) to Alabama 68 and then head west on Alabama 35 to access Fort Payne and I-59.  Residents living between Summerville and Mentone can still access Highway 48 – the road closure is only for commercial and through traffic.

In Alabama, Highway 117 between Tutwiler Gap and Cool Street in Valley Head is closed. There is no definitive timeline when it will be reopened.
