Alabama Ranks 4th In The Country In Fatal DUI’s

Alabama ranks 4th in the country for Fatal DUI’s which means residents run a significantly higher risk of being involved in a fatal accident involving a drunk driver than residents of any other state, according to a newly released study from consumer research group ValuePenguin. OVER TWO-THIRDS OF ALL DUI FATALITIES IN ALABAMA INVOLVED HIGH BAC DRIVERS: 69% of all alcohol-impaired driving fatalities involved a driver whose blood alcohol levels were near twice the legal limit.

* OVER HALF OF THE DUI FATALITIES IN ALABAMA WERE YOUNG PEOPLE: 2.7 out of the 5.8 fatalities per 100,000 residents in Alabama were young people aged 21 and below.

* THERE IS ONE ALCOHOL-RELATED TRAFFIC FATALITY EVERY 50 MINUTES IN THE US: About 12 in 100,000 people died in a motor vehicle traffic accident last year, and 28% of those fatalities involved at least one driver under the influence.

* A DUI BRINGS PAINFUL FINANCIAL & LEGAL CONSEQUENCES: A DUI can lead to thousands of dollars in fines, a 160% jump in your auto insurance premiums, a suspended license and even jail time.

Alabama lawmakers are attempting to remedy the high number of alcohol-related motor vehicle fatalities through stricter legislation. A recently passed law requires previous DUI offenders to use ignition interlock devices on their vehicles. An ignition interlock bill was passed in 2014, but the device wasn’t required for convicted drunken drivers who entered into a pretrial diversion.
