Alabama Sees Record High Employment Rate; Cherokee County Unemployment Rate Just 3.4%

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced last Friday that the state in September experienced record high employment, supporting the most number of jobs in its history with a job count of 2,048,000 bypassing the previous record of 2,045,800 – set in December of 2007.

Over the year, wage and salary employment increased by some 26,800 – seeing gains in the professional and business services sector (+11,500) the manufacturing sector (+8,200) and  the construction sector (+2,800) among others.

Alabama’s statewide unemployment rate for the month of September is 4.1% – meanwhile, Cherokee County and neighboring DeKalb County each posted rates of just 3.4%; in Etowah County, the rate was 3.9%, Cleburne County, 4.2% and in Calhoun County, 4.5%. Counties posting the lowest unemployment rates were Shelby County at just 2.8%, Cullman County at 3.1% and Marshall and Elmore Counties at 3.3%.  The highest unemployment rates were posted in Wilcox County with 9.3% Clarke County at 7.3% and Lowndes County at 7.2%.
