Angelique Kerber Defeats Karolina Pliskova to Win First US Open Title

Michael Reaves/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — New world No. 1 Angelique Kerber has defeated Karolina Pliskova to win her first U.S. Open title.

The 28-year-old German tennis player won the thrilling three-set match at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

The win marks Kerber’s second career Grand Slam title and 10th career title.

She gained her No. 1 status with her semi-final win over Serena Williams, but will officially get the ranking from the Women’s Tennis Association on Monday.

“All my dreams came true today and I’m just trying to enjoy the moment,” Kerber said Saturday after her win.
