Anniston Man Charged with Murder in Death of Wife

Authorities have charged a 56 year old Anniston man with murder although there are still a number of unanswered questions regarding the exact circumstances surrounding his wife’s death.

Anniston Police responded to the train tracks near Cooper Circle around 4:15 last Thursday afternoon in response to a report of a person having been hit by a train.  The suspect Benny Burgess was still at the scene.  According to police, crew members from the train witnessed both he and his wife on the tracks and sounded the horn, saying the couple had to be aware the train was bearing down on them.

According to Police Sergeant Kyle Price further investigation – along with observation from the train crew – showed that Burgess caused his wife to be intentionally struck.  41 year old Connie Burgess died later that night at Regional Medical Center from her injuries.

Price declined to say whether Burgess pushed or pulled his wife on the tracks, into the path of the oncoming train.

Burgess is currently being held in the Calhoun County Jail with bond set at $50,000.
