Anniston Man Indicted in Connection with Beating Death of Hospital Roommate

CCSO - Arnold (Beating Death)

A Calhoun County grand jury has indicted an Anniston man in connection with the beating death of 47 year old Ian Keith Merritt.

According to the Anniston Star – on September 16th – 23 year old Devonte Raynard Arnold, was sharing a hospital room with Merritt, when, for unknown reasons, Arnold attacked Merritt.

Regional Medical Center staff responded to the room, to find the victim lying unconscious on the floor with blood coming from his nose, mouth and head – Arnold was nowhere to be found at the time, however he was located a short time later in a room across from the nurse’s station – where he had locked himself in.

Police responded and Arnold was eventually taken into custody.

According to Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown, Merritt died 10 days later.

Arnold was arrested at the time of the incident and charged with Attempted Murder.
