Annual Baker/Dean Media Award Presented To Scott Wright And The Late Jim Davis

The annual Baker-Dean Media Award was presented to two individuals well-known for their outstanding coverage of local sports and their support of sportsmanship and teamwork. This award was presented by the museum and historical society in tribute to the careers of WEIS Radio Station Manager Jerry Baker and Cherokee County Herald Editor Terry Dean.

This recipients include Scott Wright – editor of the Post and the Cherokee County Herald.  The award will also be given posthumously to Mr. Jim Davis, who was associated with WEIS Radio first as an engineer then as the owner – from 1961 all the way up until 1983 – when he sold the station to current owner Jerry Baker.

The award will be presented bi-annually to a member of Cherokee County’s local media who has demonstrated outstanding coverage to the community as well as having a minimum of five years of service. The award will also be prominently displayed in the museum’s sports room.

There were also two special recognition plaques awarded – honoring each winner as a Cherokee Star: those include TV sports analyst and personality Jon Holder, and beloved local resident Betty White Graves Zoller – the first University of Alabama Cheerleader from Cherokee County, back in 1963.
