Another In A Series Of Area Protests Remains Peaceful

Saturday’s March and Rally in Cherokee County to express outrage at the wrongful death of George Floyd at the hands of now ex-Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin back on May 25th was a textbook example of a peaceful protest – expressing unity – a call for meaningful change – and making a point through non-violence.

The march got underway at 12:00 noon at the Hatcher Community Center, formerly the JFK Building in Centre, and the sizeable crowd  made its way to the county courthouse.

Afterwards, WEIS Radio News spoke with Centre City Council Member Cedric Williams, who is also Pastor of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Cedar Bluff:

We asked Mr. Williams what he thought about the day’s turnout:

And finally, we asked him to share his overall take on the event and his hopes for the future:

The Cherokee Branch of the NAACP organized Saturday’s event.

President of that group – Tracy Clifton Burkett, and President of the Alabama NAACP State Conference, Bernard Simelton, along with the Vice President of the local branch and several members met with Centre Mayor Wilkie and several City Council members, County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship and Chief Deputy Josh Summerford before the march to work out details.
