Alabama lawmakers passed a bill Tuesday to prohibit driving in the left lane on interstates without passing vehicles. That bill dubbed the “Anti-Road Rage Act”, passed the Senate by a vote of 31 to 1.  It had already passed the House.

The bill would prohibit staying in the left lane on interstate highways for more than a mile and a half without passing a vehicle however it does allow exceptions for traffic congestion, inclement weather, emergency vehicles, and preparing to take a left lane exit.

The sponsor is Representative Phillip Pettus – a Republican from Lauderdale County – who is also a retired state trooper.  The bill now goes to Governor Kay Ivey, who could sign it into law.  Law enforcement could issue only a warning citation for the first 60 days after the bill became law.
