ABC/Lorenzo Bevilaqua(NEW YORK) — Armie Hammer was recently named “Sexiest Risk Taker” in People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue. But while many might consider his latest movie, Call Me by Your Name, to be a risk, the actor doesn’t quite see it that way.
“I didn’t view this necessarily as a risk, ’cause I knew that this is a really small movie we’re doing in the middle of nowhere and there’s a chance that no one might ever see it,” he tells ABC Radio. “So that’s not so much of a risk as much as it is an opportunity.”
Hammer plays Oliver, a 24-year-old grad student who strikes up a romantic relationship with his professor’s 17-year-old son, played by breakout star Timothée Chalamet, over one summer in Italy.
The two actors bonded on and off set.
“More than anything I just, I met Timothée, who plays Elio in the movie, and I was just like, I really like you! Like, you’re a fantastic human being,” he says. “And we got to spend a lot of time together.”
That included several days where the two did nothing but ride bikes around the Italian countryside, which Hammer says felt like “the best job in the entire world.”
The film is already generating Oscar buzz, but Hammer says he chooses to ignore the awards chatter.
“For me, the actual reward of doing something like this is the experience of making it,” he says. “And this was such a beautiful, intense experience of going to a little tiny Italian village and living there for a summer and working with people who I love and [respect]. So anything that happens after that is just icing on an already delicious cake.”
Call Me by Your Name hits theaters Friday, November 24.
