Array of Issues Covered During Monday Morning Meeting of the County Commission

The Cherokee County Commission met Monday morning, with an agenda covering an array of items – ranging from increased safety measures on selected County Roads to a pair of new job postings to educational materials for the county school system.

The Commission approved the lowering of speed limits from 45 to 35 mph on County Road 126 (from County Road 278 to the 278 Loop) on County Road 185 (from County Road 126 to County Road 8), and on County Road 8 (from County Road 185, to County Road 45).

Job Postings included a part-time License Inspector position and a full-time HMT-1 in the Highway Department position.

Commission members also approved a two-year renewal with Fidelity Associates, for purchase of more than 600 copies of the elementary school book – “8 Keys to a Better Me”, which has been a popular choice among children in the local school system for a number of years; that agreement comes to a total cost of just over $1,400.

Also approved was an agreement with Gadsden State Community College – Cherokee campus for use of the Community Meeting Room on June 4th and 18th for the Library Reading Program.

A number of items were also declared surplus – from the Highway Department a pair of 2011 Mack Dump Trucks, and from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, a Generac 2000 Series Generator, a 2010 Ford F-150 and a 2008 Nissan Altima.

There will also be an appointment/reappointment to one position on the CED Mental Health Board that being a six-year term ending in April of 2027 and one appointment to the Cherokee County Communications District – to fill a four-year, unexpired term, ending in February of 2024.   Resumes may be submitted through close of business in the Commission Office on Wednesday, May 19th.

The next meeting of the Cherokee County Commission will be held Monday, May 24th in the County Administration Building on the Cedar Bluff Road in Centre beginning at 5:00pm
