ASWA announces Backs/Linemen of the Year winners

The Alabama Sports Writers Association announced their Backs and Linemen of the Year late Tuesday evening. The list of winners is as follows:

Spring Garden senior linebacker Luke Welsh, Piedmont senior defensive end Sean Smith, and Piedmont sophomore quarterback Jack Hayes were among the 2020 finalists.

Welsh tallied 117 total tackles (98 solo, 19 assists) for Spring Garden (12-2) last season. Thirteen of his tackles were for loss. He also had a sack and an interception.

Sean Smith, a three-time 3A Linemen finalist, collected 127 total tackles, including 30 for loss, with 13 sacks, blocked two punts, had four pass breakups, caused a fumble and had a fumble recovery for Piedmont (12-2) last season.

Hayes, who was a 3A Back finalist in 2019, accounted for almost 3,000 yards and 47 touchdowns last season. He threw for 2,408 yards and 39 scores and rushed for 577 yards on 134 carries with eight touchdowns.

The overall Mr. Football winner for 2020, as well as the Super All-State Team, will be announced at a later date.
